HKS is a quintessential representative of the "technical school" in the Japanese tuning scene. Starting in 1973 from a dairy barn at the foot of Mount Fuji, it went on to define multiple industry benchmarks for Japanese performance tuning through its dedicated focus on turbocharging and electronic engine management technologies.
The name HKS is an acronym derived from the surnames of its three founders: former Yamaha engineer Hiroyuki Hasegawa, Goichi Kitagawa, and investor Sigma Automotive. In 1974, Hasegawa engineered the first aftermarket turbocharger kit for passenger cars, firmly establishing HKS's core developmental path anchored in turbo technology. Following this, HKS pioneered the introduction of the electronic turbo timer and boost controller—breakthrough products that served as pivotal technical benchmarks in the early days of the Japanese aftermarket tuning industry.
The HKS product portfolio covers the entire spectrum of performance upgrades. On the powertrain hardware front, its GT series turbochargers (such as the GT III-RS) serve as the cornerstone for numerous high-horsepower builds, whilst the HIPERMAX series suspension dampers are extensively utilised across both street and track applications. Electronic management represents the proprietary technical edge that sets HKS apart from the competition. The F-CON series piggyback/standalone ECUs have been a go-to choice for fuelling setups on Japanese performance cars since the 1980s, with the latest F-CON V Pro delivering high-precision control over fuelling, ignition timing, and boost pressure. The EVC (Evolutional Valuable Controller) boost controller remains another hallmark electronic product. Meanwhile, its exhaust systems span a comprehensive hierarchy, ranging from the street-legal, JASMA-compliant LEGAMAX series to race-spec titanium Super Turbo exhaust setups.
At the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon, HKS showcased the peak of its engineering capabilities. Built on the GT-R Nismo, the DIMENSION Z features HKS's 4.3L STEP Pro+ forged stroker kit paired with twin GT5565 ball-bearing turbos, targeting an output of around 1,300 hp. Managed seamlessly by the F-CON V Pro and an AF Knock Amp 3 knock amplifier, it demonstrates HKS's mastery in extreme power extraction and thermal management. Alongside it, the GR Yaris DIMENSION Y employs a GT4950 BB turbo kit alongside a Power Editor R piggyback module to pump out roughly 400 hp, showcasing HKS's swift agility in catering to modern small-displacement turbocharged platforms.
For HKS, motorsport involvement is far more than mere marketing—it serves as a vital closed-loop feedback mechanism for product development. Campaigning its in-house developed Lancer Evolution in the All Japan Dirt Trial Championship, HKS has clinched three consecutive championship titles since 2023, with the company explicitly stating that racing serves to "groom young engineers and channel real-world data back into product development". This "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" ethos ensures HKS products are backed by proven track durability and real-world performance metrics. Its brand mantra also highlights "peace of mind" and "precision manufacturing", backed by ISO 9001 certification for its exhaust line-up and full compliance with JASMA regulations.
